Leona Maguire can be forgiven for taking 32 blows on the greens at the Buick LPGA Shanghai after the putting surfaces at Minhang District were damaged by extreme heat.
Brown, patchy greens lay in wait for the players on day one and Maguire carded just one birdie and one bogey in a very uneventful level-par 72 which leaves her eight shots off the pace.
It was a sublime round from tee to green for the Cavan woman who hit eleven of fourteen fairways and found all eighteen greens in regulation.
Thailand’s Arpichaya Yubol found the greens to her liking with an eight-under 64 to lead by the minimum from a host of players including Minjee Lee and Jeeno Thitikul.
It was Yubo’s first bogey free round of the year and her lowest round of the season.
“Feel great. (Laughter.) It’s feel how do you say it’s long time ago. Like I don’t make like bogey-free and then eight birdie and then lowest score like in my whole year for this year.
“I still feel great. Feel good. And then still like unbelievable for me because the green is hard for me, too, but I made it today.”
