Round two of the Sanderson Farms Championship got underway on Friday, with Waterford’s Séamus Power finding the form he had been seeking all season. The 38-year-old pieced together a four-under-par round to make the four-under cut line, positioning himself well for the weekend.
Power, who posted an even-par round on Thursday, found himself on the wrong side of the leaderboard, needing to make up ground as the field took full advantage of the scorable conditions at the Country Club of Jackson.
Power began steadily, focusing on keeping a clean scorecard before being rewarded with a birdie on the par-5 fifth. Another birdie followed as he closed out the front nine, putting himself in prime position for another sub-par score after a stunning, textbook tee shot.
Progress stalled on the 10th when Power made a bogey, but the Waterford man regrouped and quickly responded with a birdie.
Buoyed by that response, Power added two more birdies on the way back to the clubhouse, posting a four-under-par scorecard.
At the top of the leaderboard, the competition is tight, with South Africa’s Garrick Higgo leading by one stroke at 13-under.
Back in form after recovering from a shoulder injury earlier this year, Higgo’s six-under-par second round signalled a turning point for the South African.
“It wasn’t hurting me in my swing, but walking made it really bad, and then it would pinch the next day,” Higgo said. “So, I’ve been figuring out how to avoid that. I’ve changed the way I work out, being a bit more careful with that, I would say,” he added.
One stroke behind Higgo, Eric Cole and Taylor Montgomery are tied for second place at 12-under.
A second-round 67 kept Cole near the top of the leaderboard, but Montgomery’s nine-under-par 63 was the most impressive round of the day, vaulting him 33 places to T2.
Danny Walker holds solo fourth at 11-under after a four-under-par second round. It’s an important week for Walker, who sits 104th in the FedEx Cup rankings and could use some points to break into the top 100.
Tom Kim, Vince Whaley, and Frankie Capan III are tied for fifth place at 10-under.
The third round is set to begin at 2:10 p.m. Irish time on Saturday, with Power teeing off at 2:25 p.m. Irish time.
