Europe landed the first meaningful blows of the 2025 Ryder Cup, and here are five of the best shots from the opening session.
5. Stick or twist? Hatton, twists
After Jon Rahm’s tee shot came to rest against a stick underneath the right-hand trees on seven, Tyrrell Hatton and his playing partner studied it for a long time before deciding that moving the branch was too risky as the ball might move with it.
So, Hatton went for it, and the connection was perfect, the ball pierced through the gap in the trees and onto the green where two putts were enough to see the Europeans take the match back to all-square.

4. Bryson’s tee shot on the first
“We want Bryson! We want Bryson! We want Bryson!” That was the chant ringing around the first tee grandstand as the clock struck noon and the anticipation reached fever pitch. They wanted Bryson, and they got Bryson… All of him.
After Jon Rahm pushed the first shot a little right, the stage cleared for DeChambeau. This was Bryson in his element, pumped up and ready to unleash. And boy did he? 344 yards – all carry – and into the bottleneck fairway just short of the green. For good measure, he’d follow by rolling in a 15-footer for the birdie, but the tee shot was the more impressive part. What a way to play the first hole!

3. Rory strikes while the iron was hot
3UP through five holes was the sort of start Fleetwood Mac were dreaming of. But what do you do when you’re on top? You hammer home your advantage. And that’s exactly what Rory did with his wedge from the rough.
A pick up, a 4UP lead, and the American crowd well and truly silenced. The Rumours were true, Fleetwood Mac were going their own way. And in Landslide fashion too.

2. Fitzpatrick out-Scheffler’s Scheffler
Matt Fitzpatrick had lost all three of his previous Ryder Cup foursomes matches, and facing the world number one, the bookmakers thought he’d move to zero-for-four. Instead, Fitzpatrick and Åberg flipped the script and it was this shot from the Englishman on the fifth hole that set the tone.
Scheffler had put one in close from the left rough, heaping the pressure on Fitzpatrick who was a little closer but coming from a similar angle. And he stitched it, allowing Åberg to pick it up and start thinking about the next tee shot. Henley’s putt slid by, and what looked like a great chance for the Americans to get back to all-square, ended up seeing Europe take a 2UP lead.

1. Rahm’s miraculous dig from the weeds
Justin Thomas and Bryson DeChambeau outplayed Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton for the first five holes, and the Europeans were clinging by the skin of their teeth. But when Hatton pulled his tee shot into the weeds on the sixth, and DeChambeau found the putting surface, leaving an uphill 15-footer, it looked odds-on that they were about to take the first 2UP lead of the match.
Rahm, however, had different ideas. It’s hard to do justice to quite how sublime this shot was – and Hatton’s birdie putt certainly didn’t do it justice – but it earned Europe a halve and they went on to win the next two holes and never looked back.
