Ireland and England both secured commanding victories on the opening day of the Senior Women’s and Men’s Home Internationals at Ferndown Golf Club.

Strong performances in the morning foursomes set the tone before enough wins in the singles ensured comfortable victories for both sides.

Ireland and Wales’ foursomes ties were closely fought but it was Ireland who edged out their opponents and took momentum into the afternoon singles.

The reigning Senior Men’s champions were made to go the distance as Karl Bornemann and Philip Purdy had to wait till the 18th to beat Wales’ Mike White and Chris Dinsdale 2UP while Jody Fanagan and Tony Cleary had to settle for a share of the spoils as Alan Condron and Christy O’Connor won the other men’s match 2&1.

In the Senior Women’s it was a clean sweep for Ireland thanks to Laura Webb and Alison Taylor (2&1), Gail Linter and Sinead Benedetti (1UP), and Deirdre Smith and Maria O’Reilly (2UP).

That put Ireland 5.5 to 0.5 to the good heading into the afternoon and there were further wins for Bornemann and Cleary in the singles but it was the women who pulled away with Webb, Smith, Linter and Benedetti landsliding the Welsh as Ireland ran out 12-6 winners.

Ireland will take on Scotland in the next match of the group.
