John Ross Galbraith has become the latest Irishman to punch his ticket to Stage Two of DP World Tour Q-School, safely navigating the Stage One Qualifier at England’s Northumberland Golf Club.
Rounds of 65, 69 and 70 in rounds one, two, and three respectively left the Whitehead man in a share of fourth place going into the final round and with the top 14 and ties moving on to the next round.
Given his strong position, he didn’t need anything special on day four, but after trading a birdie and a bogey on holes one and two, he went eagle-birdie on four and five to strengthen his grip. He made the turn at -3 after adding another birdie and bogey on eight and nine, and even though he dropped three shots in the tougher back-nine conditions, his level-par round left him on -12 overall and in sixth place.
Unfortunately, he’s the only one of the five Irish contestants to advance from Northumberland. Daniel Mulligan, Luke O’Neill and James Sugrue all left themselves too much to do in the final round, but each finished strongly with Mulligan and O’Neill shooting closing 70s and Sugrue going one better and carding a 69.
Robert Brazill did have a good opportunity on the final day after a third-round 67 pushed him into a tie for 11th, and he remained on course at the halfway mark of his final round at one-under after three birdies and two bogeys. But it all went wrong on the back nine, and five bogeys saw him slip outside the qualification mark.
At the completion of the day, 16 players moved on with three finishing tied for 14th at -10.
