Tom McKibbin hopes he can give himself a chance of notching a second DP World Tour win after he moved into the mix at the halfway stage of the Amgen Irish Open at the K Club.
Despite some struggles off the tee for the second day in a row, McKibbin’s scoring clubs bailed him out and two birdies in his last three holes helped him to a 68 for a five-under total, seven shots behind Italian Open winner Adrien Saddier.
“I hit it equally as sideways as I did yesterday, but I holed a few long putts and scored really well again,” McKibbin said.
“It was nice to finish with a couple of birdies coming in,” added McKibbin who birdied the treacherous 7th before spinning a wedge to 6-feet on the 9th for a closing gain.
A new Odyssey putter has been behaving impeccably for McKibbin who admits he is a putter guru, but his plan was to hit the range post round with his coach Johnny Foster to put some manners on the driver.
“Hopefully, I can straighten the driver out a little bit and go from there,” he said.
“I’ve spent a lot of the last two days in the rough, so I’ll go to the range and hopefully straighten that out, because when I hit the other clubs, they seem to be going straight enough.”
It’s just over two years since the 22-year-old Holywood talent last tasted an individual victory. Team titles have been aplenty for him in his maiden season on the LIV Golf Tour but he would love to get the competitive juices flowing over the weekend in front of home crowds.
“I wanted to come back and play well, and I have scored quite nicely the first two days, and to put myself in with a good chance for the weekend is exciting,” he said.
