Dungannon’s Dwayne Mallon edged Oscar Murphy by a single stroke and took victory at the Magee 1886 Scratch Cup at Donegal Golf Club, while Mountrath’s Stuart Carter came out on top in the Junior Scratch Cup.
Despite a wet start, the weather cleared to set the stage for a thrilling afternoon of play as the Senior Scratch Cup was contested over 36 holes. The round of the day went to Murphy, who made history by shooting an extraordinary, seven-under 66 in the second round – a new course record for Donegal Golf Club.
However, it was Mallon who emerged victorious, shooting a 67 of his own, which, coupled with a level-par 73 in the morning, left him on six-under after 36 holes, one ahead of Murphy who’d carded a 75 in round one. Concra Wood’s Charlie McDonnell took third place on -2, while Ballybofey & Stranorlar’s Barry McMenamin came fourth at one-under.
In the Junior Scratch Cup, Stuart Carter claimed victory after a fantastic, edging Ballyliffin’s Jack McIntyre into second by one, and Jayson McIntyre a shot further back in third.
The club wished special thanks to Britton Insurance and the Britton family, sponsors of the Junior Scratch Cup, and the Temple family and the Magee 1886 collection, sponsors of the Senior Scratch Cup, and whose continued sponsorship has made this event a highlight of the club’s annual calendar.
“These long-standing partnerships reflect a deep history of commitment to both the club and the game of golf in the region,” a club spokesperson said.
“The success of the day would not have been possible without the generous and longstanding support of the Temple-Magee families, Magee 1886, Britton Insurance, and the Britton family. Their unwavering commitment to the club has played a vital role in raising the standard of golf and elevating the profile of the event year after year.”
Donegal Golf Club looks forward with great anticipation to welcoming competitors and supporters back for next year’s Magee 1886 Scratch Cup, and the Britton Junior scratch cup in 2026.
