Colm Moriarty had to share the spoils with Jimmy Bolger after the pair shot matching seven-under 65s in the Limerick Golf Club Pro-Am on Friday, but the Glasson Lakehouse pro was able to celebrate solo victory after a five-under 66 in the Newcastle West Pro-Am 24 hours later.
After a slow start in which he failed to birdie the par-5 opener and then bogeyed the par-4 fourth, Moriarty responded in ideal fashion to birdie three of the next five and make the turn at -2.
On the way home, he made back-to-back birdies on 13 and 14, then signed off in style with another birdie – his sixth of the day – on the par-4 18th, setting an early morning target that would prove out of reach for the afternoon wave.
Of the late starters, James Quinlivan of Mullingar Golf Academy came closest to reeling him in. Quinlivan started in grandstand fashion with an eagle on the first, and made the turn at -3. He tied Moriarty on the 14th after making his second birdie in a row, but a dropped shot on 15 proved costly and he ended up one stroke shy.
He shared second place with Tim Rice, who made four birdies and went bogey-free, with Richard Kilpatrick, Shane Jenkinson and Keith Shannon finishing tied for fourth at -3.
Moriarty now has three victories [two shared, one solo] in his last four starts having gone zero-for-18 despite numerous top-10 and top-five finishes earlier in the year.
