Round two of the Rogers Charity Classic got underway on Saturday as prime conditions opened the door for low scores around Cayon Meadows.
Looking to make the most of the conditions are Darren Clarke and Padraig Harrington, as they sat in T22 and T34 respectively after round one.
Darren Clarke bettered his round one score, as the Tyrone native got off to a hot start making three birdies in the first five holes. A couple more birdies came on the back nine, but the 57-year-old will be disappointed not to make the most of the gettable par-5 18th as the 2011 Open winner made a bogey to close out his round two three-under-par and remains in T22 on five-under for the week.
Padraig Harrington began his round two on the back nine as a slow start saw the three-time major winner bogey the 13th and 16th holes, before a well needed birdie came on the 18th.
Struggling for momentum, the 53-year-old could not avail of the conditions as Harrington added two more bogeys to his round, but shown why he was 11 Champions Tour wins under his belt as he managed to reduce the damages with three birdies to see him post an even-par round, taking him to one-under for the week and in a tie for 50th.
Miguel Angel Jimenez didn’t let an early bogey spoil his day as the 61-year-old posted another seven-under-par round as back-to-back 63’s sees the Spaniard at the top of the pack at 14-under-par, one ahead of Australia’s Richard Green.
Jimenez, who’s no.1 in the Charles Schwab Cup, is looking to add to his 17 Champions Tour wins with a fifth win of the season.
A fifth victory would extend his record as the oldest player in Champions Tour history with four or more wins in a single season, which he set earlier this year at the Kaulig Companies Championship, and he would become just the second international champion in tournament history, joining Carlos Franco who earned that feat in 2016.
Jimenez is four-for-four when leading/ co-leading entering the final round in 2025.
Richard Green posted the lowest round of the day, as an eight-under-par round two sees the Aussie seek his first win on the Champions Tour.
USA’s Tommy Gainey, making his PGA TOUR Champions debut, posts a second straight 64 to sit two back heading into the final round in T3.
Argentina’s Ricardo Gonzalez remains bogey-free through 36 holes, as the 55-year-old posted a seven-under-par round to have him move up five places and into a tie for third at 12-under.
Two-time Charles Schwab Cup Champion and first-round co-leader Steven Alker also posted a bogey free round, making five birdies to join Gonzalez and Gainey at 12-under-par.
