Simon Thornton’s hot streak continued as the Newcastle native made it back-to-back victories in cruising to a five-stroke win in the Fred Daly Memorial Pro-Am at Balmoral Golf Club in Belfast.
Less than a week after securing his fourth Irish PGA title by two strokes at Monkstown, Thornton bogeyed his opening hole at Balmoral but shrugged off any signs of a hangover by making back-to-back birdies on seven and eight to turn at -1.
Two more pars followed, then he caught fire on the 12th, making the first of what would be six birdies in a row to post the winning number.
Cormac Sharvin, who finished tied for third at Monkstown, took the runner-up place with a two-under 67, while Colm Moriarty, Paul Eivers, Eoin O’Brien, and Ciaran Lavery shared third a shot further adrift on -1.
Thornton, who now has six (five solo, one shared) victories in 18 starts in the region in 2025 holds a commanding lead at the top of the Elavon Order of Merit standings and will be looking to take win number seven at Kilkea Castle’s Conor O’Dwyer Pro-Am on Friday before turning his attention to the K Club’s two-day Pro-Am, which features a €100,000 prize pool, on Monday and Tuesday next week.
