Knock’s Katie Poots put on a finish for the ages, carding four birdies and an eagle in her last five holes to top the qualifiers at the AIG Women’s Close Championship in Ardee.

Poots signed for a second round of 68 for a nine-under total to top the 36-hole stroke play ahead of Anna Abom by three shots.

Poots was having a slow day through two thirds of her round, mixing three bogeys with two birdies to lie one-over for her day after 12 holes.

A par on 13 lit the touch paper for a sensational run. She rolled in three birdies in a row on 14, 15, 16 before an eagle on the par-5 17th was followed by a closing birdie as she finished with four threes in a row.

Poots will face off against Tramore’s Anna Dawson in the last-16.

Dawson was well placed after an opening 72 but finished in 16th place after a second round of 78.

Abom will face Moyola’s Kayleigh Mulholland while Aideen Walsh of Lahinch goes up against Ballinrobe’s Shannon Burke.

Royal Portrush’s Hannah Lee-McNamara and Kate Dwyer of Rossmore will go head to head in the third match while Romford’s Zoe McLean-Tattan faces Libby Fleming of El Camino.

Meanwhile, Holly Hamilton and Kate Dillon do battle as Ellen O’Shaughnessy faces Ella Cantwell and Maebh McLoughlin plays Molly O’Hara in the bottom match.
