Paul McBride shot an opening four-under 67 to sit tied for seventh after day one of the Clutch Pro Tour’s Motocaddy Championship at Redditch Golf Club in the English midlands.
The Island man was slow out of the traps, following a par on the opening hole with a bogey on the second, and though he birdied two of the next four holes, a bogey on nine saw him turn at level par.
A bogey on 15 was the only blemish on his back nine, however, and birdies on 11, 12, 14, 17 and 18 saw him charge up the leaderboard and get within two shots of the first round lead.
John Ross Galbraith and Robert Brazill share 38th place at -1, with James Sugrue one further adrift on level-par.
At +3, Rory Williamson and Conor Murtagh need to go low to make the 36-hole cut, while the task is even tougher for Ignatius McGuinness at +4, Liam Cully and Karl McCormack at +5, Scott Montgomery and Andrew Browne at +6, and Liam Hickey on +7.
England’s Jake McGoldrick and Matt Gauntlett lead the way after matching six-under 65s, with a further four English players at -5 including Nick Ward who still has three holes of his opening round to complete and could set the bar a little higher with a strong finish.
