It wasn’t to be for Ronan Mullarney at the Alps Tour’s Biarritz Cup as the Galwayman carded a final round of 66 (3-under) to finish one shot outside a playoff where France’s Victor Dubuisson, 35, a former Ryder Cup player and two-time DP World Tour winner, clinched the title.
Mullarney, who led by one stoke heading into the final day in France after a round of 60 on Saturday, carded two bogeys and two birdies on his front nine before adding four birdies on the back nine, but he was left to rue a late bogey on the 17th which kept him outside the playoff places.
As for Dubuisson, he emerged victorious following a dramatic two-hole sudden-death playoff against Spain’s Jorge Maicas where both players made par on the first playoff hole, but Dubuisson secured the victory with a birdie on the second.
Known for his exceptional short game and composure under pressure, Dubuisson brought valuable experience to the event. A standout in European golf, his rare appearance on the Alps Tour offered younger players a unique opportunity to compete alongside one of France’s most accomplished professionals.
After sitting tied for fourth place at 11-under-par through two rounds, he delivered a flawless final round of 8-under (61), carding nine birdies, including a vital one on the 18th and just a single bogey.
Commenting on the birdie on 18 Dubuisson commented: “Those putts are never easy—especially uphill ones, which I don’t particularly like—and I had a few more than usual today. But once you hit a good putt, it’s out of your hands whether it drops or not. That last one was an excellent putt to finish with.”
He then went on to speak gushingly about the sponsor for the week CS Partners: “I’m very happy, and especially pleased for Gerald. He’s the title sponsor of the tournament and the one who invited me to play this week. We met through golf and developed a strong friendship. I admire how he supports young golfers and professionals—that’s created a special bond between us.
“I’m also proud to coach some of his players, and this week, the plan was for him to caddie for me so we could experience the tournament together. It definitely turned out to be a great week.”
And expanding on the sponsor he added “You couldn’t ask for a better sponsor than Gerald or a more professionally organized tournament than this edition of the Biarritz Cup. It was a real pleasure to be part of it.”
As for Jorge Maicas, 27, he secured a strong runner-up finish having delivered a flawless final round of 9-under (60), also carding nine birdies and the performance capped off an impressive week for the rising Spanish talent, who captured his first Alps Tour title earlier this season at the 2025 Gösser Open.
Ireland’s other representative, Robert Moran, added a final round of 64 (5-under) which moved him up into a tie for 12th place.
After the 2025 Biarritz Cup by C&S Partners, the Alps Tour Order of Merit rank has Javier Barcos from Spain in the lead with 22,517.34 points. Italy’s Jacopo Vecchi Fossa is in second place with 21,506.63 points, and Spain’s Alvaro Hernandez Cabezuela is in third place with 20,248.13 while Mullarney’s €5,245 haul has moved him to sixth place..
The Alps Tour players now have a few weeks off before the next scheduled even,t which gets underway from September 4th-6th at UGolf Longwy International in France for the second edition of the 2025 Longwy Alps Open.
