Michael Young carded a four-under 68 in the opening round of the Alps Tour’s Alps de Las Castillas in Albacete, Spain, and he goes into round two sharing sixth and three off the lead.

The Paris-born Irishman, playing alongside Hugh Foley in the opening two rounds, started on the 10th and birdied four of his first nine with a bogey thrown in and turned at -3. After two birdies and two bogeys on the front, he reached the final hole of the day on the same number, but closed out with another birdied to push his way inside the top 10.

Ronan Mullarney is next best of the Irish after a two-under 70 that left him in 30th place, one shot ahead of Foley who produced a one-under 71 to end the day sharing 45th.

Robert Moran (+3) and Marc Boucher (+4), sit T119 and T128 respectively, and have their work cut out to make the cut which will see the top 40 and ties advance to Friday’s final round.

Spaniard Antonio Hortal sits all alone at the top of the leaderboard after a seven-under 65 in which he went bogey-free and made five birdies and an eagle. He holds a one-stroke lead.

“Today was a perfect day tee to green and some chip-ins helped me too,” Hortal said. “Maybe my putting wasn’t excellent, but it was good enough for a good round. My driving was probably the best part of the day; I was very solid and happy about it.”
