Leona Maguire will have to overcome odds of 150/1 with BoyleSports to land a lucrative victory this week as she gears up for the first major of the women’s golf season this week.
The Chevron Championship offers the first of five opportunities for the Cavan woman to break her major championship duck this year and while she tees it up in Texas among the outsiders, optimistic Irish punters are hopeful of a timely return to form after her outing last week in the JM Eagle Championship.
A consistent campaign for Maguire since the turn of the year has featured seven strokeplay events without missing the cut and while she faded over last weekend to finish tied-37th, she was well positioned at halfway in Los Angeles just five shots behind leader and eventual winner Ingrid Lingblad.
World Number 1 Nelly Korda was also a prominent feature on last week’s leaderboard and the defending champion is an 8/1 shot to add another Chevron Championship to her glittering CV, making her joint favourite alongside in-form Thai, Jeeno Thitikul.
Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for BoyleSports, said: “Nelly Korda and Jeeno Thitikul have all the credentials to serve up a classic this week, but Leona Maguire has given the Irish some optimism and they’ve been keen to snap up chunky odds on a major effort in Texas.”
