Shane Lowry bookended his second round with bogeys as he fell eight shots off the pace at the RBC Heritage at Hilton Head.
In between those dropped shots the Clara man rolled in birdies on the fifth, ninth and fourteenth holes but a round of 70 saw him slip to 30th place on four-under with Justin Thomas leading by two from Russell Henley and Si Woo Kim on twelve-under.
Thomas added a round of 69 to his blistering Thursday effort of 61 to reach twelve-under-par.
Tommy Fleetwood is in the pack at nine-under while world number one Scottie Scheffler is a shot further back.
Thomas is winless since the 2022 PGA Championship and knows there’s a long way to go on a course that demands precision.
“I’d say the majority of it has just been pressing and trying too hard,” Thomas said. “I think it’s just that’s something I feel like I did so, so well there for a couple of years is I just let tournaments come to me and I just trusted in my ability. That’s just really been my key this week is I’m just trying to really trust my game and commit to what I’m doing.”
The American has a temporary caddie in Joe Greiner while his regular looper Matt Minister recovers from a back injury.
“He’s still getting used to everything as much as I am,” Thomas said after a debate on the 15th. “We were talking about the shot and trying to hit it right at the green. The tree was kind of in the way. I was like, ‘I feel like it’s a good 3-wood number.’ And he was like, ‘Yeah.’
“Then after I hit it, he goes, ‘I’m so glad you said that because I thought it was a perfect cut 3-wood, but I didn’t want to say that.’ That’s some of the funny adjustments and things we’re working with.”
