Trinity College student Eoin Sullivan fired a bogey-free 66 to share the lead after the opening round of the R&A Student Tour Series at St Andrews.
Sullivan is tied at the top on six-under-par alongside Cardiff’s Thomas H Peet on a day of low scoring on the Jubilee Course.
The 23-year-old opened with five successive pars but gained momentum with birdies on the 6th and 9th holes.
Sullivan went through the gears and rolled in three successive birdies from the 11th and added another on 16 to join the lead.
Liam Abom and James Walsh are the best of the Maynooth University contingent after they carded two-under-par rounds of 70 to share fifth place.
Defending champion Ryan Griffin is making his first appearance of the season following back surgery and he carded a perhaps to be expected, rollercoaster round of 72.
Griffin mixed four birdies and an eagle with six bogeys to share 13th place with teammates Jordan Boles and Aodhagan Brady.
Griffin, Boles and Simon Walker are making their final appearances for Maynooth University this week and Walker is two-over.
Meanwhile, in the women’s section, defending champion Kate Lanigan has work to do after a two-over 76 also on the Jubilee Course.
The Maynooth University golfer is eight shots behind Elice Fredriksson.
