In the immediate aftermath of his Players Championship victory, Rory McIlroy admitted that he was going to play one more PGA Tour event before rolling into Augusta for the latest attempt at securing the Career Grand Slam, but which of the two Texas-based events he’d tee it up in was left unanswered.

McIlroy was in attendance to watch good friend Shane Lowry and his Bay Golf Club side take on Atlanta Drive in the second semi-final of the TGL – a league in which McIlroy and co-founder Tiger Woods both missed out on playoff qualification – and he confirmed in an interview that his final start pre-Masters would be at The Texas Children’s Houston Open.

McIlroy has alternated major preparation, sometimes playing the immediate week prior and sometimes taking that week off, and this year it’s the latter.

McIlroy’s addition to the field also means that the top two players in the world will tee it up against each other a fortnight ahead of the year’s first major. Scottie Scheffler previously publicly committed to play in Houston, where he finished runner-up a year ago.
