It was a partnership which saw both climb their Everest together, but after six years, Matthew Fitzpatrick and veteran caddie Billy Foster have parted ways.
Foster first picked up Fitzpatrick’s bag in 2018 after splitting from Lee Westwood and the two shared plenty of success together with the 2022 US Open Championship in Brookline being the highlight.
It was Fitzpatrick’s maiden major title but it was also a first major win for Foster who famously had never been on the bag of a major winner during more than 40 years as a caddie despite stints with Seve Ballesteros, Sergio Garcia, Thomas Bjorn, Darren Clarke and even Tiger Woods as well as Westwood.
Fitzpatrick, 30, also won the 2018 Omega European Masters, the DP World Tour Championship, the Andalucia Masters, RBC Heritage and Alfred Dunhill Links in 2023 alongside Foster during a glittering period in their careers.
However, Fitzpatrick, who was ranked as high as 10th in the Official World Golf Rankings as recently as April of last year, has racked up just three top-10s since 2023.
The Sheffield born man reached a career high 6th in the world in 2023 but has since slipped to 61st in the world, his lowest ranking in almost a decade.
It has been a disappointing start to the year in general for Fitzpatrick too, with his best finish so far being T24 at the Sentry and a missed cut at the Players Championship has proven the final straw for he and Foster.
Foster took to instagram to announce the news of their seemingly amicable split.
“Well after 6 great years, all good things come to an end,” Foster wrote. “This game never stops to frustrate you & infuriate you….!!! Unfortunately times change & ultimately it’s the caddie or the coach that has to accept results are not good enough & when you stop enjoying what you are doing it’s time for a change. Thanks Matt we had a great run & who knows where the next chapter will go. Onwards & Upwards.”
