Cork’s David Howard eagled two of his last three holes to turn a poor day into a good one as he soared into contention at the Toro Tour Azata Golf.
Howard was five-over-par through eleven holes after a double bogey on the 2nd, four bogeys and one birdie but played his last seven holes in six-under-par to card a remarkable one-under 70.
The Fota Island man lies three shots off the pace but leads the amateur section after birdies on the 12th and 14th holes before he eagled the par fives 16th and 18th to come home in 30.
His one-under-par round has given him a one-shot lead over Iceland’s Logo Sigurdsson.
