Irish Amateur Close champion Thomas Abom leads the Irish charge after the opening day of the Portuguese Amateur Championship.

The Maynooth University student who has already won a Student Tour Series event in his first year is two-under-par after an opening 71.

Abom trails leader Ben Brown by five shots after he strung together six birdies and four bogeys.

Teeing off from the tenth, the Edmondstown golfer started well with back to back birdies before giving them straight back with bogeys on 12 and 13.

A brace of birdies on 17 and 18 saw him turn in 36 but two bogeys in three holes to start his back nine dropped him back to par.

Abom finished well with birdies on the 5th and 8th to share 18th place.

Luke O’Neill is T42 at level par and Louis Goodman is T100.
