Kate Lanigan leads the Irish charge after what proved a slow day at the 95th Portuguese International Ladies Amateur Championship at Penina Hotel & Golf Resort.

Lanigan is perched just outside of the top-20 on two-over-par after a round of 75 which leaves her sight shots off the early lead held by Sweden’s Matilda Bjorkman.

Lanigan who plays out of Hermitage Golf Club recovered from a poor start that saw her bogey three of her opening six holes to salvage her round.

The Maynooth University star rallied with a birdie on the par-3 8th and cancelled out a dropped shot on 14 with a birdie on the 15th.

16-year-old Roscommon talent Olivia Costello who was second at the Andalucia Cup earlier this month is a shot further back on three-over after an opening 76.

A stuttering start also left Costello up against it early on as starting from the 10th she opened with back to back bogeys.

She did birdie the par-5 18th and a second birdie of the day on the third was sandwiched between bogeys on the 1st and 4th. Her round would end on a sour note as the dropped a shot on the 9th.

Lahinch’s Aideen Walsh is inside the top-50 on five-over after an opening 78.
