Former Walker Cup star Mark Power secured a share of second place at the Alamos Open on the Portugal Pro Tour as he showed some early winter form.

Power shot rounds of 70 and 65 for a seven-under total, one shot shy of eventual winner Casper Simberg.

The Kilkenny man turned in 35 strokes after an opening birdie was followed by a birdie on the 4th and a dropped shot on the 9th.

However, he burst into life and produced some of the golf Irish fans know he is more than capable with a birdie on the 12th, an eagle on the par-5 14th and back to back birdies to finish and give himself a chance of a maiden professional victory.

He was forced to settle for the runner-up spot but it was a positive showing for the 24-year-old and for the Irish overall with three players inside the top-8.

Laytown & Bettystown professional Alex Maguire was in a share of the lead after an opening round of 66 but he came away in a share of fourth place on six-under-par after a second round of 70.

Mullingar starlet Daniel Mulligan was two shots further back in a share of eighth place after rounds of 68 and 70.

For Power, it was a confidence building week as he looks to shake off a disappointing end to 2024 which saw him miss out on significant status on the HotelPlanner Tour (formerly Challenge Tour) and bow out early at LIV Promotions.

“I’ve been working very hard at home, went to Spain a week or two ago so just chipping away really. Disappointed with how I finished off last year but lots of stuff in the memory bank.

“I’ll play a few mini tour events I know the Clutch Tour are running an International run in the Middle East so I will look at going out there for a month or so and seeing what I can do. I’m on the Portugal Pro Tour to sharpen up.”
