Niall Kearney narrowly missed out on qualification at the Final Stage of Asian Tour Q-School but it wasn’t for the lack of trying as the Dubliner carded rounds of 66 and 67 over the final two legs but came up two strokes shy.

Knowing that anything short of a round in the mid-60s would likely see him come up short, he kept a clean card, birdieing the 11th and 16th holes – his second and seventh – to make the turn at -2, but despite further birdies on five and nine, his final tally of -8 wasn’t enough to push him inside the 35-man cutoff point.

Ultimately, he was left to rue a slow start to the five-round event, but hopes that his T46 finish may be enough to get occasional starts on the Asian Tour and he doesn’t rule out playing events on the Asian Developmental Tour next year as a means to gaining full Asian Tour status.

“It’s a bit disappointing,” he said. “I played very solid, just a slow start made it difficult.

“I should get a few starts and [have to] make the most of them. As for the ADT, I’ll wait and see the schedule. If they have a couple back to back I might travel. It’s getting a bit stronger and obviously it’s a pathway to the Asian Tour.”
