PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan earned more than $23 million in 2023 according to a document obtained by Sportico.
Monahan’s earnings also include a remarkable $12.1m bonus, $2.5m in post-retirement benefits and $6.7m in long term incentive compensation while his base salary for the year was $1,887,096.
Such earnings would have pt him inside the top-80 in the official money list on the PGA Tour for the season just gone with his total take home bettered only by world number one Scottie Scheffler who won seven times in total.
Golf fans have reacted angrily online with Monahan already under fire for his part in the never ending negotiations between golf’s major tours as well as the tours membership and the overall threat of LIV Golf.
One fan on social media said: “My brain can’t even comprehend this. Jay Monahan making $23m. Loses half their elite players and 3 of their longest and most loyal PGA Tour sponsors and still rakes it in as ratings plummet. Made more than Rory! Great job if you can get it.”
Another added: “Worst commissioner in pro sports. It’s ridiculous he still has a job. Let a rival league take half his top players and he’s losing sponsors left and right.”
A third insisted: “There’s no one more overpaid in the world than Jay.”
The document obtained by Sportico also shows that the PGA Tour COO, Ronald Price, earned more than $13m in regular and differed compensation including bonuses worth up to $7.8m.
The return covers the six month periods before and after the tour announced a framework agreement with LIV Golf in June of last year.
