Seamus Power is just four shots off the lead heading into moving day at the PGA Tour’s Sanderson Farms Championship in Jackson, Mississippi.
It’s a course that Power has played well at, going into the final round firmly in the mix during his rookie PGA Tour campaign in 2016 and finishing inside the top 20 in back-to-back seasons in the years following.
He had it on a string from the tee on day one, ranking first in Strokes-Gained in that category, but despite the other aspects of his game not quite firing on all cylinders, he managed seven birdies and a -6 tally.
He wasn’t quite as impressive off the tee on day two, but his iron-play in particular and his short game and putting were all improved. It didn’t quite manifest itself on the scorecard on his outward nine, as birdies at one, three and five were offset by bogeys on four and eight, the second of these caused by pulling his tee shot into the hazard on the par-4.
There were no mistakes on the back side, however, and a birdie at the par-3 13th got things going again and the highlight was yet to come. A 302-yard drive found the front of the putting surface on the par-3 15th and from 27 feet, he sank the eagle putt to move into double digits under par for the tournament. He followed that with another birdie at the 16th after wedging to four feet, and could’ve had two more at 17 and 18 but missed putts from 12 and 15 feet.
Overall, he’ll be satisfied with his -11 36-hole tally and will fancy his chances of challenging for victory over the weekend.
American Beau Hossler has come through to take the lead after an eight-under 64, with Daniel Berger, who continues his comeback after a series of injuries, one shot in arrears.
England’s David Skinns, who came desperately close to becoming the 14th man to shoot a 59 on the PGA Tour in Thursday’s opening round, could only manage a one-under 71 and is part of a three-way tie for third at -13.
