Cormac Sharvin will head for DP World Tour Q-School’s Second Stage qualifiers in Spain at the end of October thanks to a fifth-place finish in the First Stage at Belgium’s Millennium Golf.

Back-to-back four-under 67s had the Ardglass man nicely positioned at the halfway point, but with scoring low and only the top 17 guaranteed of advancing to Second Stage, knew he’d need to back those up with strong scoring over the final two rounds.

A six-under 65 on day three saw him climb inside the top-10, and the same number in the final round sees him safely through.

He hadn’t made a bogey since the sixth hole on day one, and when one did finally arrive on the seventh hole of round four, the damage wasn’t significant as he’d just birdied the three holes prior and then added another birdie on the ninth to turn at -3 for the day and -17 overall.

Two more birdies at 10 and 11 effectively sealed his safe passage to Second Stage, but with cash prizes also up for grabs, he was intent to keep the foot down.

Another birdie on 15 got him to -20, and though he’d bogey 17, he signed off with another birdie at the last which saw him end the week in solo fifth place, safely through to Second Stage and he’ll cover his expenses for the week.

Hong Knog’s Matthew Cheung and Australian Joshua Greer took joint medallist honours on -22 having reeled in and overtaken German amateur Cedric Otten who had looked poised to go wire-to-wire.
