Cormac Sharvin is just 18 holes away from moving onto DP World Tour Q-School Second Stage after a six-under 65 in round three of the First Stage qualifier at Belgium’s Millennium Golf.
Back-to-back rounds of 67 had the Ardglass man in good stead at the halfway mark, but with the course setup and conditions favourable to the high-quality fields, his -8 36-hole tally was only good for a tie for 24th and he was still outside the projected qualification mark which will likely fall around 20.
But he made a big leap up the leaderboard on Thursday thanks to a six-birdie haul with no dropped shots. In fact, he’s only made one bogey in his first 54 holes, that coming on the par-4 15th in what was his sixth hole of the tournament.
Sharvin’s ability has never been in question, but he’d dropped off the pace considerably before turning up at the K Club Pro-Am earlier this summer and walking away with the top prize, and now he’s up to a tie for eighth place at -14 and has just another 18 holes to navigate to advance.
German amateur Cedric Otten continues on course to be leading qualifier, but after rounds of 61 and 63 on days one and two respectively, he slowed down to a 68 in round three but at -21, holds a five-stroke lead over his nearest challengers with Sharvin just two further adrift.
