Cormac Sharvin is well placed in a tie for 22nd after the opening round of the DP World Tour’s First Stage of Q-School at Belgium’s Millennium Golf.
The Ardglass man is the sole Irish representative at this qualifying venue, and he made five birdies in his opening round, with a lone dropped shot coming on the 15th – his sixth. He made the turn at -2 and then picked up another two strokes on the front nine, the last of the five birdies coming at the par-4 ninth hole.
He’ll need to keep the foot down over the next 18 holes to ensure he makes the 36-hole cut, and with somewhere in the region of 20 places at Second Stage available, will possibly need to get to double-digits under par to be in with a chance of advancing given the low scoring on day one.
German amateur Cedric Otten leads at -10 after a back-nine 29 and a bogey-free, 10 birdie round, with local favourite Kristoff Ulenaers in hot pursuit at -9.
Rowan Lester remains the only Irishman thus far to successfully navigate First Stage in 2024 having qualified at The Players Club in Bristol last week.
