The Claret Jug is one of the most prized possessions in world golf, but the winner of this year’s Open Championship at Royal Troon will also walk away with the largest first place cheque in Open Championship history.

The R&A has announced a record $17 million purse – a $500,000 increase on that doled out in 2023 – and the winner will take away $3.1 million.

“The R&A has a responsibility to strike a balance between maintaining The Open’s position in the global game, providing the funds required for governance and developing amateur and recreational golf in 146 countries internationally,” said Martin Slumbers, CEO of The R&A.

Defending champion Brian Harman received $3 million for his victory at Royal Liverpool where the entire prize purse for the 151st Open saw an 18 percent increase on that which was up for grabs at the 150th Open at St. Andrews in 2022.

The game’s oldest Major Championship remains the least lucrative of the four men’s Majors, however, with this year’s U.S. Open offering $21.5 million, compared to $20 million at Augusta National back in April and the $18.5 million which was on offer at the PGA Championship in May.
