The US Open trophy and a whole lot of money will be awarded Sunday at Pinehurst No. 2 as the USGA announced a record purse for the 2024 U.S. Open. Upping the prize pool by $1.5 million for this year’s championship, the USGA will shell out a total of $21.5 million to players who made the weekend with the winner of the 124th U.S. Open earning a major championship-record $4.3 million first-place prize.
It seems the battle between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf has forced the hand of governing bodies that run the men’s big four events to ratchet up paydays. It’s a huge increase that has seen the U.S. Open purse increased 72% in just the last three years and it’s now more than double what it was in 2016.
