Seamus Power is set to join Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry and Tom McKibbin at Pinehurst next week after the Waterford man finished co-medalist at the Final Qualifier at Ohio State University Golf Club.
The two-time PGA Tour winner opted to tee it up in Ohio as he’s in the field for the Memorial Tournament later this week at Jack Nicklaus’ Muirfield Village in nearby Dublin, and after opening with a seven-under 64, looked set to cruise through the 36-hole qualifier as he birdied three of his opening six in round two.
A bogey on 11 was followed by back-to-back birdies on 12 and 13, but two bogeys in succession starting on the 15th saw him reach the final hole at -9 and though he didn’t know it, needed to birdie to avoid a five-for-four playoff. He duly rolled in the 10-footer and immediately checked the leaderboard to find out the lie of the land.

To his delight, he was informed that he’d finished joint top and was straight through, meaning that there will now be four Irish representatives in the field in North Carolina.
Elsewhere, Adam Scott lost out in a two-for-one playoff with fellow Australian Cam Davis, meaning that Scott’s streak of 91 consecutive major championship starts is in severe jeopardy, and although he is first alternate, it’s a case of wait and see for the former Masters champion and world number one.
Other veterans such as Webb Simpson and Matt Kuchar succesfully navigated their qualifiers, but Graeme McDowell was unsuccessful in his bid at Springfield Country Club.
