BoyleSports has slashed the odds of Shane Lowry claiming a second Open Championship into 25/1 (from 40/1) in the wake of his sixth-place finish at the PGA Championship.
The Clara native carded a 62 in his third round, the joint lowest round ever recorded in a men’s major, but a final round of 70 saw him seven shots behind tournament winner Xander Schauffele at the death.
Having gotten within one of the lead after four holes of his final round, Lowry may have walked off the course disappointed with a sixth-place finish, but confidence is building amongst punters that he will flourish again at July’s Open Championship at Scotland’s Royal Troon.
A 2019 victory in the same event at Royal Portrush saw Lowry record his only major championship win, pulling clear of the chasing pack by an incredible six-shots and with the links clearly suiting the Offaly man, he could be a major liability for the bookies come tee-time.
Lowry is also down to 40/1 from 50/1 for next month’s US Open at Pinehurst, where PGA Championship victor Xander Schauffele is 12/1 to notch up a second major victory in succession, while world numbers one and two, Scottie Scheffler (4/1 fav) and Rory McIlroy (10/1), also remain high on the shortlists of punters.
Brian O’Keeffe, spokesperson for BoyleSports, said: “It was a drama filled PGA Championship and with Shane Lowry continuing his fine run of form, punters are latching onto the Irishman claiming his second major this summer.”
