Seamus Power credited a hot putter for his opening 65 at the RBC Heritage as he finally saw some on course results after making some early season changes.
Power is just two shots off the leader JT Poston on six-under-par and shares second place at Harbour Town and he was in sizzling form around the greens, ranking 4th in strokes gained around the greens and third in putting.
“Yeah, putter felt great, to be honest,” said the West Waterford man who has fallen outside the top-100 in the Official World Golf Rankings.
“Made a couple of changes in it in probably the last four or five weeks and today started to see it in Tour mode, which is always nice. Felt comfortable with the speed, and as soon as your speed is good you’ve got chances, and you feel like you can make a lot of stuff.
“Long game was decent. Wasn’t spectacular. A couple of looser ones here and there, but for the most part it was pretty steady and I was able to make enough putts.”
The two-time PGA TOUR winner roared out of the traps in style with three successive birdies before adding a fourth birdie on the par-5 5th. He added two more birdies on the 10th and 13th and he recovered from a bogey on the notoriously tricky par-3 17th with a closing birdie.
Power feels he hasn’t been scoring as heavily as he should have but was delighted to see some good shots rewarded and hopes he can keep it going over the weekend.
“Yeah, just getting the putter going. It makes such a difference. Even on 1, a couple of nice shots in there and being able to capitalize. I’ve been doing a lot of that recently where I’m hitting some good shots but not making them count, and then you make a mistake or two and then all of a sudden you’re back to where you started.
“It was nice to really make that one on 1 and get going and it just kind of fed into the rest of the day. It can happen like that; once you see one go in, all of a sudden things seem much easier.
“Hopefully a good sign of things to come.”
