Padraig Harrington is the gift that keeps on giving and he was forced to get down o his knees to save a miraculous par during an eventful level-par 70 in the Texas Children’s Houston Open.
On the 569-yard 16th hole, Harrington pulled his drive under some trees. Struggling with knee problems for the last few years, he bit the bullet and suffered the pain as he got down on them and stabbed a five wood 120 yards back into play and he managed to get down in three from 205 yards on the par-5 for a superb par.
The 52-year-old’s latest bid to become the oldest PGA Tour winner and play his way into the Masters in two weeks hit a snag after a good start.
Following an opening bogey, Harrington came roaring back with birdies on the third, fourth and eighth holes and it could have been better had he taken good opportunities on the fifth and sixth.
However, he stumbled around the turn bogeying the ninth, eleventh and fourteenth before restoring parity with a welcome birdie on 15.
“Use a five wood if possible for this as you’re less likely to snag the heel and it takes the shank out of play. #paddysgolftips,” Harrington told his followers on X.
The three-time major winner lies six shots behind Wilson Furr and Taylor Moore who both shot six-under 64s to edge ahead of world number one Scottie Scheffler by the minimum.
