Joaquin Niemann’s second win in three 2024 LIV Golf starts sees the Chilean take his season earnings north of $8 million, averaging over $900,000 per round played on the circuit.
It’s been a great five weeks or so for the 25-year-old, shooting his first competitive 59 in Mayakoba, beating Sergio Garcia in a four-hole playoff a couple of days later, getting a Masters invitation, and then doubling down on the season’s victories in Jeddah. Financially speaking, the ship has come in and the Torque GC captain will be among the favourites when the cream of the golfing world assemble at Augusta National in just over a month’s time.
South African teammates Charl Schwartzel and Louis Oosthuizen tied for second and each get $1,875,000, while they’ll also get a share of the $1.5 million for finishing runner-up to Bryson DeChambeau’s Crushers GC in the team standings.
Graeme McDowell’s final-round four-under lifted the Portrush man into a tie for 31st, meaning he walks away with $153,750, while Anthony Kim can console himself with a $50,000 cheque, despite finishing on +16, 11 behind his nearest challenger and 33 shots behind Niemann.
Shane Lowry started the final round of the Cognizant Classic with eyes on a first PGA Tour victory in almost five years and the bonus of $1.62 million, but not for the first time, water was his undoing at PGA National. Two years ago, it was a 72nd hole deluge, combined with a fast-finishing Sepp Straka that derailed his challenge, this year, thunderstorms delayed the final round and two visits to the uisce on Monday forced him to settle for a tie for fourth and $344,250.
Rory McIlroy’s seven-way tie for 28th saw him walk away with $87,750, with his short birdie putt on the last horseshoeing out and costing him almost $50,000.
Tom McKibbin seemed poised for a second DP World Tour victory when he hit the front towards the end of round two at the SDC Championship before the wheels came off and he eventually had to settle for a tie for 12th, six shots behind winner Jordan Gumberg. McKibbin walked away with a shade under €22,000, while Gumberg’s victory earns him a promotion from the Challenge Tour and almost €234,000 as well.
At the LPGA’s HSBC Women’s World Championship in Singapore, Leona Maguire also held a brief share of the lead, albeit on day one, but disappointing middle rounds saw her fall back into midfield, eventually finishing tied for 34th and earning $11,434.
Australian Hannah Green finished birdie, birdie, birdie to overtake Celine Boutier and take professional victory number 11 along with the $270,000 top prize. Boutier had a front row seat to Green’s heroics, and the reigning Evian Championship winner’s consolation was almost $170,000.
