Rónán MacNamara in Riyadh
Weekend rounds of 74 shaved a few zeros off the paycheque of Leona Maguire at the Aramco Saudi Ladies International presented by PIF but she will head to Thailand and Singapore determined that her game is on the right track.
Maguire opened with a frustrating round of 76 but took her anger out on Riyadh Golf Club on Friday, shooting a blistering 64 to roar back into contention and raise hopes of a maiden Ladies European Tour title.
However, she was unable to ride that momentum and had the wind sucked out of her sails on Saturday and a Sunday surge wasn’t forthcoming.
The Cavan star feels she played better than her level-par total suggests – which was good enough for a T29 finish, eighteen shots adrift of runaway leader Patty Tavatanakit – feeling she was harshly punished for good shots tee to green and that the putting surfaces were “a lottery.”
“Yeah lots of positives I felt like I played some really good golf this week and got punished for some really nice shots. There’s enough good golf in there to bring a lot of confidence into Singapore and Thailand just a bit of a lottery around the greens really which was a bit frustrating.”
This was Maguire’s first start in almost a month and just her third of 2024, she can look forward to back-to-back LPGA Tour events in Thailand and Singapore and she feels confident about her game.
“I felt like I hit a lot of good shots and was punished, I feel good with where my game is at and I’m looking forward to two more events to get back into the swing of things.”
