Kate Lanigan carded a two-under 71 on day one of the 94th Portuguese Ladies Amateur in Penina to leave her in a share of tenth place.

Lanigan is four shots off the lead and is the best of the Irish contingent after a tidy round which consisted of three birdies and just one dropped shot.

Elm Park’s Emma Fleming is just a shot behind Lanigan on one-under after a 72. The Bridgestone Order of Merit winner opened with a brace of bogeys but recovered with three birdies in a clean closing 16 holes to move into a share of 17th.

Roscommon starlet Olivia Costello had a tale of two nines as a five birdie burst on the back nine saw her claw back a level-par 73 to leave her in a share of 25th position.

Former Curtis Cup star Annabel Wilson and Mairéad Martin of Kanturk are both on one-over-par after rounds of 74.
