Maynooth University’s David Kitt was satisfied with his opening round of 69 at the 15th King Hamad Trophy in Bahrain as he moved into a share of third place on three-under-par.
Kitt recovered from an early bogey on the fifth with three successive birdies from the ninth which kickstarted his round and he consolidated a very structured round of golf with a closing birdie on 18 to lie four shots off the lead held by USA’s Cole Madey.
“Happy with my round today, it was very windy all day so played solid, hit a lot of greens which was key because it can be tricky to get up and down as you get bad lies in the Bermuda grass,” said the Athenry man.
Kitt is the top ranked amateur on the leaderboard alongside Sam Mullane after the first round while his Maynooth teammates Eoin Murphy (Dundalk) and Simon Walker (Roscommon) are on level-par.
Alex King is on six-over-par while Dubai based Irishman Alistair Hess is eighteen-over.
“It was great to get an invite to play in this prestigious event with the other Maynooth lads, playing in great weather, against some top pros and ams,” continued Kitt.
“Never been to this part of the world so it’s great experience playing in different conditions. Especially this time of year when there is no tournaments to play. Looking forward to teeing it up again tomorrow on a great golf course!”
