Conor Purcell returned early this morning to complete the final two holes of his opening round of the Challenge Tour Grand Final and he did so unscathed, closing with two pars to remain on one-under.

It gives the Portmarnock man an opening 71 and leaves him in a share of third place on one-under-par, just two shots off the lead held by Marco Penge and Tom Vaillant at Club de Golf Alcanada.

Play had been suspended early on Thursday due to unplayable wind and the 26-year-old was pleased to eventually complete his first round without any major mistakes.

“Very pleased, yesterday was very tricky it was just a matter of hanging in and keeping the ball in play which I did well. Always nice on the restart to come out and play pretty well,” said Purcell who is projected to rise from 36th to 24th in the Road to Mallorca Standings but needs to keep pushing to crack the top-20 and seal a DP World Tour card on Sunday evening.

Although he needs a strong finish this week he won’t be straying away from his game plan of plotting his way around the golf course in the tricky conditions.

“Just limiting mistakes I think. When you hit a bad shot just recover as best you can, not making big numbers which I’ve managed to do.”

“More of the same, keep it in play, few tricky tee shots so just lay back and keep the ball on the fairway as best I can. Rest up for the afternoon and go again.”
