Laytown & Bettystown amateur Alex Maguire has made a bright start to the Second Stage of DP World Tour Q-School as he opened his account with a one-under 70 in Fontanals Golf Club, Girona.
Eleven Irish hopefuls were dotted around Spain all vying for spots at next week’s Final Stage and it was in Catalonia where the players shone brightest.
Maguire who won the St Andrews Links Trophy earlier this year, impressed in the First Stage as he and Mark Power breezed into this weeks second phase and he lies just three shots off the early pace in a share of eighth place.
Derry native Ruaidhri McGee is a shot further back while Kilkenny professional Power is on one-over after a 72 which leaves him around the bubble alongside Irish Close champion Robert Moran in a share of 21st place.
Kinsale’s John Murphy has work to do from four-over after an opening 74 on a day of tough scoring.
In Isla Canela Links, 2017 Walker Cupper Paul McBride and Niall Kearney are the best of the Irish in 51st place on level-par with Italian Pietro Bovari setting the early target on ten-under.
Alps Tour Order of Merit winner Ronan Mullarney is a shot further back.
High winds caused play on the opening day of the Challenge Tour Grand Final to be suspended and poor weather caused havoc at Q-School with Carton House amateur Marc Boucher on two-over and in 49th place at Desert Springs before play was halted.
Meanwhile play in Golf Las Pinaillas never got started.
