Colm Moriarty picked up his seventh win of the year with a two-shot victory at the Moran Cup in Royal Dublin.
Moriarty was the only player to shoot under par on a blustery day, carding a one-under 71 to fend off Limerick’s Tim Rice.
The Moran Cup is one of the most prestigious events on the PGA in Ireland region and it brought the curtain down in the final event of the campaign.
“The Moran Cup is a very prestigious event, first played in 1920. It’s always been a prestigious event and it’s always a treat to play Royal Dublin they have done a lot of work on the bunkers and it has really enhanced the course even further.
“I was delighted to win there was a tough wind whipping across the course which always makes it play tricky especially on the way back with a strong left to right wind. To get a win in the last event of the Irish season is great as well.”
The Moran Cup becomes Moriarty’s seventh victory of a superb year but he isn’t finished yet with four events abroad to come as he looks to add to his growing trophy cabinet.
The Glasson professional started the year with aplomb picking up a shared win in the Flogas Pro-Am in Woodenbridge and in Newlands. He made it back-to-back and had the spoils to himself in Elm Park where he raced around in a course record 62 for his third victory of the season.
Wins in Bellewstown and St Margarets followed while he also won the Irish PGA Professional Championship in Co. Louth Golf Club in April before coming third at the Club Professional Championship in Sherwood Forest.
“I was delighted to get that many wins and shoot a lot of good scores and I played well in the Club Pro Championship in the UK as well so I was happy with the year,” said Moriarty a former Challenge Tour winner.
“There was better golf in there as well with is good and I will try work on that over the winter and you have to keep sharp, we have a lot of good players on the region so you have to be on your game if you want to be winning.
“The more wins the better and it was great to shoot some low scores. No matter what level you are at you want to give it as good an effort as you can and shoot as many low scores as you can. It’s good to keep the game sharp and fitness sharp and then see the results off the back of that.”
Moriarty was seriously impressed with the standard of pro-am events on the PGA in Ireland region with players having to go deep into red figures to get wins.
“The pro-ams have been really busy this year which is great we have had a great appetite from the amateurs. The professionals have had a huge appetite which keeps the amateurs coming back and the amateurs are the most important people. If we can give them a good day out, give the sponsors some good coverage and a good day out they will come back and maybe bring more people into it.
“I have a few events abroad over the winter lined up and I have done some gym work over the last few years to keep myself in shape and keep my speed. Generally November and December are quiet and I teach in Glasson but by January and February we are getting ready for the season again.”
