A second-round, three-under 69 saw Padraig Harrington climb into a tie for eighth at the PGA Champions Tour’s Dominion Energy Charity Classic The Country Club of Virginia, Richmond.

Just a single bogey – that disappointingly coming at the par-5 sixth – accompanied four birdies at two, nine, 15 and 18 as the three-time major winner improved on his opening effort by two, moved to -4 for the tournament, and into a tie for eighth on an extremely top heavy leaderboard.

Unfortunately, Darren Clarke’s isn’t one of the names near the top as the 2011 Open Champion slumped to a two-over 74 that dropped him to +3 for the week. Two bogeys and a double saw him cover his opening four holes in +4, and though he’d do well to stem the bleeding thereafter, he was too far back to have any real chance of getting back into contention at the first of the senior circuit’s three season-ending events.

Brett Quigley is hoping to get his second win in as many starts, having won the Constellation Furyk and Friends event a fortnight ago. A five-under 67 backed up his opening 68 and at -9 for the event, enjoys a one-stroke lead over Y.E. Yang, Harrison Frazer and Richard Green.

2009 PGA Championship winner and the first Tiger slayer Yang’s 63 on day two is the best of the week, with Ernie Els (-6), and Miguel Angel Jimenez and Mike Weir (-5) all well within reach along with the further quintet that includes Harrington and Colin Montgomerie at -4.

“I thought it was really good until I saw Y.E.’s score,” Frazer said after his 67, “and I was like ‘holy cow.’ I mean, what a round that is today in these conditions. I just told Cookie earlier that I was just trying to get into the last group and looks like I’ve accomplished that, goal. So set a new goal tonight and try to make a bunch of birdies.”
