Paul McBride was left to rue a closing bogey as he missed out on a playoff at the Alps Tour Grand Final at Asolo Golf Club.
McBride carded rounds of 66, 71 and 70 for a nine-under total for a share of third place but he was a shot outside the playoff which was won by wire-to-wire winner and the aptly named, Augustin Hole.
“I couldn’t have wished for anything better than this. I fought hard today and throughout the entire event,” said an ecstatic Hole. “I was looking for this victory for over a year. It’s been a goal of mine to win an Alps Tour event for over a year and to be able to do it today, I’m speechless. I lost my dad a couple of years back, and this one is definitely for him and for my family around me. I’m so grateful to have the people that I have around me, my staff, my friends so this one is for them and for myself. I give all of them credit but also myself. I now have Stage 2 of Q-School and hopefully, I will be able to repeat the same thing there but we will see how it goes. Now I will enjoy it and take a few days off.”
There was still some Irish celebration at the end of the season as two-time Alps Tour winner Ronan Mullarney bounced back from an opening 74 to maintain his place at the summit of the Order of Merit and win the season long race.
McBride started his final round shakily with a pair of bogeys before birdies on the fifth, ninth and twelfth lifted him back into contention.
The Island golfer birdied 15 and 17 to join the lead but fell out of it after a closing bogey.
Mullarney ended up claiming 20th place on three-under with a final round of 67 while Rosslare’s Paul Murphy slipped to level-par after a round of 73 and 29th place.
