Ireland with work to do in Eisenhower Trophy

Ireland are languishing in a share of 26th place, ten shots behind joint leaders USA and France after day one of the Eisenhower Trophy (World Amateur Team Championships) in Abu Dhabi Golf Club.

An Ireland team made of up Walker Cup stars Matthew McClean, Alex Maguire and Liam Nolan are a collective one-over-par with two of the three scores counting.

France and the USA are both nine-under-par and hold a one-shot lead over the Netherlands with Australia, England, Argentina and Denmark a shot further back.

The USA team is also an all Walker Cup outfit with Gordon Sargent, US Amateur champion Nick Dunlap and David Ford.

Malone’s McClean leads the Irish charge on the individual front on level-par after a 72 and in a share of 46th place while Maguire (Laytown & Bettystown) is on plus one and Nolan (Galway) on three-over after a round of 75.
