Conor Purcell remains on course to qualify for the Challenge Tour Grand Final next month while Jonathan Caldwell has work to do over the final two rounds of the regular season.
Both players are tied for 19th place at the halfway stage of the Hainan Open in China which cements Purcell’s place in the season-ending event but leaves Caldwell with a mountain still to climb.
Purcell is projected to rise to 35th in the Road to Mallorca Rankings while Caldwell is due to climb two places to 69th but needs to crack the top-45 in the rankings over the next 36 holes.
Purcell and Caldwell are both five-under-par. Purcell started well with an opening 67 but backed it up with a disappointing level-par 72 while Caldwell improved from a day one 71 with a solid 68.
The lead is held by home favourite Chuan Lin Jian on eleven-under-par.
“I will try my best to stay on top,” he said. “To achieve that I will need to do my best in every round and every shot. If I manage to win this week, I will seriously consider about the opportunity to play a full season on the European Challenge Tour.”
