Ireland move into second place after win over Scotland at R&A Senior Home Internationals

Ireland bounced back from defeat to England with a 10.5-7.5 victory over Scotland on day two of the R&A Women’s & Men’s Senior Home Internationals at West Kilbride.

Ireland took a narrow 6.5-5.5 lead after the morning singles with Deirdre Walsh (Milltown), Declan O’Neill (Grange), Gertie McMullen (The Island), Jim Carvill (Banbridge) and Suzanne Corcoran (Portumna) all winning their matches and Tracy Eakin (Dooks), Alison Taylor (Malahide) and Peter Sheehan (Ballybunion) all took half points to take the lead heading into the afternoon foursomes.

It was in the afternoon session when Ireland pulled clear, winning the session 4-2 with Jim Carvill (Banbridge) and David Mulholland’s (Castlerock) 5&4 thrashing in the second game the highlight of the session for the Irish team as they secured their first win of the tournament.

A 9-9 draw between England and Wales means England lead heading into the final day of fixtures on 1.5 with Ireland in second place on 1 point with a better scoring difference over Scotland. Ireland will hope that Scotland beat England as well as bettering Scotland’s point difference to take home the trophy.
