Moneyball: Hovland cashes in as Schauffele’s consoles himself with bridesmaid gold

Viktor Hovland may not have managed to get a maiden Major title on his resumé in 2023, but the 25-year-old finished runner-up at the PGA Championship and was inside the top-20 at each of the other three majors and secured his eighth worldwide win at the Tour Championship at East Lake, taking with it the $18 million first prize, taking his fortnightly earnings to $21.6 million.

Xander Schauffele, who now has an outright win and two low-72-hole scores [albeit jointly with Hovland this year] at East Lake, will have to console himself with the $6.5 million runner-up prize, while U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark, whose breakout year had already seen him earn almost seven times what he’d managed in his previous best year, added an additional $5 million to the kitty.

Rory McIlroy, who it had been feared would have to withdraw pre-tournament with a muscular back injury gets $4 million for soldiering on to the end and impressively taking fourth, while Scottie Scheffler, who had the opportunity to take on-course earnings to almost $40 million for the year had he made full use of pole position and gone on to win, will have to settle for a $2 million payout.
