County Longford Golf Club celebrated a home win at the Australian Spoons today as the team of Anne Casey and Ann Gregg picked up the win.
The pair had a score of 38 Stableford points which was enough to get the better of Angela O’Hara and Anne Bennett (Lismore), Emma Keating and Michelle Keating (Cahir) and Colette Henry and Antionette Barrett (Rathsallagh) who also finished on 38.
It was a fantastic win and Casey said it was a shock when they found out they had just enough to seal a famous win in their home golf course.
“When we came in we were told that we were lying second. Then Mark gets up and tells us that there are four 38s. And we said, knowing our luck now, we will probably be fourth. You called third, you called second, and then… What a surprise, we’re absolutely delighted,” said Casey.
Casey and Gregg had 19 points on the front and back nine and despite a slight slip up on the last, they secured the dramatic narrow win at home in Longford.
“There was a lot of expectation but Ann and I are very well used to playing together. We’re very relaxed, she is so chilled and nothing matters,” said Casey.
“There is no sorrys but there was a few times, I really did have to say sorry, putting a ball into the water on the 15th and then setting up a four putt scenario on the 18th. Other than that we had a very relaxed round of golf with two lovely ladies from Limerick.
“We know it has been here in the club a few times and we could never qualify. That was the big thing, to qualify to be here.
“And I suppose once you were here you had a little bit of a chance. It was a huge honour and we’ll be back next year.”
