Tim Rice was the only man to hit red figures as he won the Burkeway GGC Pro-Am in Galway Golf Club.
Rice carded a one-under 69 to edge out Druids Glen winner Simon Thornton by the minimum while last week’s back-to-back winner Paul Eivers of Cahir Park was a shot further back on one-over.
It was a steady round from the Limerick man who turned in level-par after a bogey on the third was cancelled out by a birdie on the par-3 9th. He moved into the red with a birdie on the par-5 12th and closed with six successive pars to complete a bogey-free back nine.
“It’s never easy to win these things. There’s always somebody who is going to shoot a score. It was a very tough day with the wind and it’s a tight golf course. There was a big wind across the golf course and it’s tight and treelined with greens like glass so I battled away all day,” explained Rice who picked up his second win of the season on the region.
Eivers might have missed out on his third invidivual win in four pro-ams but he was still smiling at the end of the day after his team romped to a five-shot pro-am victory with 93 points.
David Mortimer’s team were second on 88 while Neil O’Briain’s team were third on 86.
